South Eastern railways needed a solution to the problem of existing access steps and work platforms being left too close to the parked trains potentially causing damage to the rail stock.
The design team came up with an innovative but simple guide system to eliminate the risk of damage to the trains.
The order included the supply of 18 new mobile work platforms, 2 mobile overhead gantries for the maintenance of the air conditioning units in the roof of the train, six 11m long fixed platforms for safer access to the driver cab area and the modification and painting of 12 existing units to fit the new guide system. The installation team installed 1400m of guide system along 5 sets of track. Electrical isolation was added the track and platforms for operator safety.
The gantries comprise of aluminium construction with GRP steps and flooring, all platforms will be powered coated in the depot colours and fixed to the new guide system.
The access systems are used to ensure safe access to all areas of a 4 and 8 car train, speed up production and enhance the excellent production facilities within the depot.
The work platforms performed perfectly and continue to give good service showing the robustness and excellent quality of workmanship and materials that were used to produce these products. Many more work platforms steps and gantries have subsequently been ordered for the rail depot.
